Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers about mobile dog grooming with Julia's Pet Spa, serving Gaithersburg, Rockville, Potomac, Germantown, Olney, and communities across Montgomery County, MD.

What are the benefits of mobile dog grooming?

Mobile dog grooming brings a professional groomer straight to your driveway, so your dog is never crated, transported, or left waiting among unfamiliar animals. For most dogs, that means a calmer, less stressful appointment than a traditional salon visit. It also means no drop-off, no pickup, and no waiting-room time for you - the groom happens while you go about your day at home. For dogs who get anxious around strangers or other animals, or who have had a stressful salon experience before, one-on-one grooming in a familiar environment often makes a real difference.

How often should I groom my dog?

Most dogs do well with a full groom every 4 to 6 weeks. Dogs with longer or curlier coats - poodles, doodles, and similar breeds - often need grooming closer to every 4 weeks to prevent matting, while short-haired breeds can sometimes stretch to 6 to 8 weeks. Between full grooms, regular brushing at home and routine nail trims help keep your dog comfortable. If you're not sure what schedule fits your dog's coat and lifestyle, Julia's Pet Spa can recommend a cadence after your first visit.

Mobile dog grooming vs. salon grooming - which is better?

It depends on what your dog needs. A salon can be a good fit for dogs who are relaxed around other animals and don't mind waiting, and salons sometimes offer a wider range of add-on services in one location. Mobile grooming is usually the better fit when a dog gets anxious in new environments, struggles with car rides, is a senior or has mobility issues, or simply does best with calm, one-on-one attention rather than a busy salon floor. With mobile grooming, there's no crate time, no exposure to unfamiliar dogs, and no waiting room - the groomer works with your dog alone, in a space they already know.

How do I prepare my dog for a mobile grooming appointment?

There's not much to do - that's the point of mobile grooming. Make sure there's a spot near your driveway or curb where the van can park, and have your dog ready to come outside a few minutes before the scheduled time. A short walk or bathroom break beforehand can help your dog settle in faster. If your dog has any health conditions, recent injuries, or specific anxieties, mentioning them when you book helps Julia plan the appointment around your dog's needs. Everything else - water, towels, equipment - comes fully stocked in the van.

Can I get customized dog grooming packages?

Yes. Every full-service appointment already includes a complete package - haircut, deep-cleaning bath, hand drying, nail clipping, ear cleaning, paw tidy-up, and a sanitary or face trim as needed - priced by your dog's size rather than as separate add-on fees. If your dog has specific needs or preferences, such as a particular cut style, extra-gentle handling, or skipping a step that doesn't apply, just mention it when you book and Julia will tailor the visit accordingly.

Do you offer calm, stress-free grooming for anxious or first-time dogs?

Yes - this is one of the most common reasons clients choose mobile grooming in the first place. Without crate time, car travel, or a room full of unfamiliar dogs, many anxious dogs settle faster than they would at a salon. Julia works at a slower, calmer pace with nervous or first-time dogs, taking breaks when needed and building trust rather than rushing through the service. If your dog has had a rough grooming experience before, let Julia know when you book so the appointment can be paced accordingly.

What dog breeds does Julia's Pet Spa groom?

Julia's Pet Spa grooms dogs of all breeds and mixes, from small dogs to larger ones. Rather than specializing in one breed, Julia focuses on what each dog's coat and temperament need: curly and doodle coats get extra attention to prevent matting, double coats are handled to protect the undercoat, and nervous or reactive dogs get a slower, calmer appointment. Larger dogs are welcome when they can follow commands and stand calmly on the grooming table. A groom is much harder when a dog sits or lies down, so larger dogs need to be able to stay standing. Julia does not offer hand stripping. Not sure how your dog's coat, size, or temperament fits? Ask when you book.

How much does mobile dog grooming cost in Maryland?

Full-service grooming with Julia's Pet Spa is priced by your dog's size, starting at $110 for small dogs (up to 15 lbs), $130 for medium dogs (15-30 lbs), and $150 for large dogs (30-50 lbs). Each price includes a full haircut, deep-cleaning bath, hand drying, nail clipping, ear cleaning, paw tidy-up, and a sanitary or face trim as needed - there are no separate add-on fees for these standard steps. Dogs over 50 lbs, matted or poorly maintained coats, and dogs who haven't been groomed in a long time usually cost more because the appointment takes more time and work, and appointments farther outside the regular service area may be priced individually. Julia does not offer hand stripping. Ask for an exact quote when you book.
